Thousands of residents in six counties may be eligible.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced its approval for the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) to help low-income residents in six Mississippi counties—Carroll, Humphreys, Monroe, Montgomery, Panola, and Sharkey—affected by recent tornadoes and severe storms.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stated that approximately 29,000 families that may not usually be eligible under ordinary Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) requirements may qualify for D-SNAP provided they meet certain standards along with the disaster income limits and have qualifying disaster-related costs.
“D-SNAP provides vital essential food assistance to Mississippi residents struggling with the aftermath of severe storms and tornadoes,” Secretary Vilsack said. “USDA recognizes that the crisis doesn’t end when the wind dies down. For many families in these stricken areas, it’s just beginning.”
The state will administer D-SNAP in two phases and will continue to share additional information about designated site locations through local media.
